CTS - Use of mobile devices in hazardous areas

INFORMATION ONLY

CTS have recently provided guidelines to clarify mobile device usage. The guidelines specifically pertain to non-intrinsically safe mobile devices, which may pose an ignition risk. Intrinsically safe (IS) devices like radios and PGM units are excluded and governed by existing site standards.

To use a non-IS mobile device without a work permit, the following conditions must be met:

The device must have an IP68 (water/dust resistant) rating or higher

  • The device must be in a case that is rated IP68 (water/dust resistant) or higher
  • The device and case must be inspected, approved, and listed on the approved devices register
  • The user must complete mobile device training in Lucidity and wear a PGM
  • There must be a valid business reason, such as taking photos for inspections/procedures
  • Use of pool devices is preferred in the first instance and can be loaned from the Terminal control room.

If these conditions cannot be fulfilled, the device is prohibited from entering the terminal's restricted areas.

These guidelines apply to CTS staff only - contractors require a work permit to bring devices on-site.

Small waterproof cameras used on-site also require an IP68 case or a permit to use. An IS pool camera is available.
